Practice: Beginner’s Mind Inquiry

Starting in beginner’s mind, contemplate the following questions:

Am I proud of my spiritual practices, achievements, and realizations? Do I consider myself a better student, yoga teacher, or meditator than others? Do I feel as if I am more important, more advanced, or more accomplished than others? When I am prideful or arrogant, do I feel closer and more unified with Life, or more separate and alone?

Do I repeatedly find myself arguing and defending myself? If so, can I ask myself, what am I defending?

Am I free to fail, to make mistakes, and grow? If not, am I afraid of being human, of being humble?

Am I open to learning from everyone and everything? Or am I stuck in egoic pride and divisiveness? Can I see that the entire universe is alive and teaching me? Can I see that Life is teaching me in every moment through pain, heartache, praise, blame, hope, and fear? Can I see that everything in life is here to open and teach me?

Am I committed to continual practice and continual examination of my ego? Or do I become easily bored and distracted by life? Do I practice each day? Do I make my spiritual life a priority? How deep is my commitment to the Truth, to my path?

Have I surrendered every aspect of my ego over to something greater?
